Surfing USA
I would be very grateful if anyone has any key information about surfing in New York. I understand Long Beach is quite the place. Can I get there on the subway? Are there any speciality beaches? Where can I hire/buy a board? Will I get beaten up by locals for being a tea-drinking limey? So many questions...

(I'll precede my comments by saying you guys are amazing!. I wonder if your Mount Everest sketch was a "ti p of the hat" to Python's "Double Vision" sketch (the one in which John Cleese is planning a mountaineering expedition).
Now..to answer your question:
I'm a native New Yorker..so here are a few tips.
We don't have a lot surfing here. Not in Manhattan, anyway. We do, however, have a lot of cruising. Check out the gay bars in the West Village for some of that action. Many of them are walking distance from where you'll be perfoming. The bars are much more convenient. No surfboard is necessary. (They don't fit well on the subways anyhow). People will yell and laugh at you.
Now..something else you should know: New Yorkers don't shock easily. The great comedian David Brenner said that the consummate New Yorker is one who would "Walk by a sewer explosion; watch a manhole cover go 50 feet in the air; and call 'heads'" (In other words, would treat it as casually as they would a coin toss (we have the heads of presidents on one side of our coins).
I'm a chick, so the gay bars are an easy, no-pressure scene for me. I'm also 40. You can probably do better than a 40 year old comedy geek. I'd be happy to show you around, though. I can take you to the lesbian clubs too if you wish. The cruising there would be a little less Or we can check out the great comedy clubs together.
If you're not interested in that, I could score you guys some tickets to see "Spamalot" on Broadway if you haven't seen it yet.
Let's chat.
Are you only interested in staying in NY?
I surf in southern New Jersey on Long Beach Island - it can be alright - nothing like Florida or Cali. There are other beach towns closer to NY along the Jersey coast, too, Point Pleasant, Belmar, Seabright, Long Branch, Deal, and Asbury Park to name a few.

Hope this was helpful - I am seeing you all this Saturday and next at 10:30 - I cannot wait!
Long Beach, California is quite the place. As well as Pismo, Laguna Beach, Palm Springs, etc. Ironically, I'm leaving from the Long Beach airport to JFK tomorrow. While we dream of a subway connecting the coasts, you can take Jetblue over here. Although we may all point and laugh at your foolishness, the waves just might be worth it.
Most surfers in New York surf out on Montauk on Long Island. You can get there by taking the Long Island Railroad from 34th Street/Penn Station. Whether or not they beat you up, depends on how many beers they've had.
yeah- ps. surfing in new york is bad. the water is cold and the waves are small and the currents are silly and the rides are short and to really get up your ass it's all incoveniently located in overcrowded faraway places. perhaps some people will say there is good surfing- they are only fooling themselves. go ot hawaii or something.
